Maverick British director Thorold Dickinson (Gaslight, The Next Of Kin, Queen Of Spades) cut his feature-film teeth on this thriller. A star footballer is found murdered during a match and pipe-smoking Scotland Yard Inspector Leslie Banks is brought in to investigate. It's clunky but likeable stuff, packed with period detail, and vintage soccer fans will enjoy seeing the actual 1938 Arsenal team all playing themselves, complete with laboured banter and wondrously baggy shorts.
