Since Caroline Aherne’s self-imposed exile from British comedy, there’s been a conspicuous lady-shaped vacancy waiting to be filled. Step forward Royal Shakespeare Company-trained actress Catherine Tate, ready to don Aherne’s former crown thanks to her one-woman-styled Fast Show. From chavvy Vicky Pollard-alike to cackling, rough-as-old-boots Cockney Grandma, Tate has created a diverse range of madcap characters aided by the sterling work of the BBC’s make-up department. What’s even more impressive is that, with the rib-tickling profession dominated by the waft of testosterone, Tate has jostled into position alongside jesters such as Ricky Gervais, Peter Kay, Matt Lucas and David Walliams in the British comedy court.
