
With a cast of thousands, some great actors (John Gielgud, David Hemmings, Trevor Howard, Vanessa Redgrave) and a potentially eye-opening final battle, Tony Richardson's 1968 wannabe epic should have been bound for glory. It drops the ball, however, by paying far too much attention to the minutiae (precisely recreating the look and feel of Victorian cavalry life) and nowhere near enough to script and pacing. The end product is beautiful but stagey, its lengthy running time sure to have you gasping for breath.
