In a Nutshell:
Three brothers go on a spiritual quest to regain their bond after a year of silence.
Jack: 'I wonder if the three of us would've been friends in real life. Not as brothers, but as people.'
Rita: 'What's wrong with you?'
Jack: 'Let me think about that. I'll tell you the next time I see you.'
Jack: 'I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face!'
Three brothers reunite on a train in India after not speaking since their father’s funeral a year before.
The train is headed to their mother (Angelica Huston) who left the family years before their father’s death to set up a convent in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Each brother is suffering from some sort of depression or is unhappy in their life back home.
Francis (Owen Wilson) is the oldest brother and has recently suffered head injuries from a motorcycle accident, Peter (Adrien Brody) has marital problems and his wife is expecting their first child, while the youngest brother Jack (Jason Schwartzman) is a writer who has just been dumped by his girlfriend.
The trip is not as smooth running as Francis hoped; they acquire a venomous snake and accidentally let it loose on the train, they get into trouble with the train guard and are confined to their quarters, and they constantly fight and argue.
When their train gets shunted to an unknown rail track, they are rendered lost, and despite their spiritual surroundings, the environment does not help bring together the reconciliation they hoped for.
With their mother unaware of the journey, the brothers know they must be united when they meet her to bring together what remains of their family.
