
Ethan Hawke’s sophomore directorial effort sees his 27-year-old alter ego William (Mark Webber) lovestruck and swooning over Catalina Sandino Moreno’s guitar-strumming beatnik. The Before Sunrise player based the film on his own semi-autobiographical novel, and it’s a turgid, precious affair. Fitfully animated by the odd star turn (such as Laura Linney, marvellously prickly as Webber’s tough-loving mom) and an ear-tickling soundtrack (Feist, Cat Power and, er, Snorer Jones), but sadly lacks anything approaching dramatic momentum or, indeed, a point.
