Anyone who's ever grimaced at Sammo Hung's plank-like presence in TV's Martial Law will be dumbstruck by the competence of the rotund one's 1977 directorial debut. Not only is his comic acting as supple as his fighting, but the film itself - about a rebellious monk's vendetta against the oppressive Manchus - is more forceful, more elaborately plotted and more shrewdly shot than 99% of `fu flicks.
