A pre-GoodFellas Scorsese steamed up fundamentalist fervour with the perfectly reasonable question: if JC was part man, wouldn't he be blessed/cursed with, like, mannish foibles? Unlike the standard, pandering religious epics, it's a spiritual, speculative look at how a self-doubting Christ (well tackled by a slightly too clean-cut Willem Dafoe) might have overcome temptation to accept his martyrdom.
