
Frank Sinatra's Frankie Machine leaves rehab determined to swap skag for music. But before you can "just say NO!" that pesky monkey's all over his back again. Okay, so this 1955 Sinatra vehicle was Hollywood's first drugs-based film, and its innovative jazz score and title sequence put Elmer Bernstein and Saul Bass on the map. But does a spot in cinematic history justify DVD shelf space? Er, no. Otto Preminger's melodramatic direction, a heavy-handed script and hammy supporting cast trample Sinatra's vulnerable and charming performance underfoot.
