Set in the '50s, The Masters sees Philip Seymour Hoffman star as the charismatic Lancaster Dodd, a WW2 veteran who founds his own religion as a way of coping with the trauma of his experiences.
Taking on cult-like levels of popularity, his influence begins to grow as people willingly flock to him in search of guidance.
One such individual is Joaquin Phoenix's disenfranchised drifter, who stumbles across Dodd having been discharged from the army, and soon falls under his spell, eventually becoming his right hand man.
The Master is Phoenix's first major film since his "retirement", and he looks astonishing in the first trailer. His return is as welcome as P.T. Anderson's, the director having been off the radar since There Will Be Blood in 2007 and he's brought with him Jonny Greenwood to write the score once again, who has provided us with something that flickers with charm and menace going by what we've heard so far.
Co-starring Amy Adams, The Master will open in the UK on 9 November 2012. There will be awards....
