But from the moment Frank encounters his boss' femme fatale wife Cora (Lana Turner), it's clear there's murderous, adulterous trouble ahead. Forget Bob Rafelson's overwrought remake starring Jack Nicholson - Tay Garnett's 1946 take on James M Cain's novel is the real deal: a taut, economical noir with tremendous lead performances.
