
Part nubile chick thriller, part incest-fuelled family drama, part high-school confessional, Jamie Babbit’s film never quite succeeds in jigsawing its mismatched pieces together. Hinging on an orphaned deaf girl unravelling the dark secrets of the small town family who take her in, the performances are decent but the plodding plot arc and cumbersome MacGuffin make it difficult to connect with the characters, while shooting most of the movie in blue-tinged near- darkness means it’s pretty difficult to see them too. The extras make for similarly slim pickings.
