Director John Huston hated his own 1960 Western, and you can't entirely blame him - its anti-racist impulses are roundly scuppered come the close. Still, it's a solid-enough piece and typically Huston-esque in the way it folds big themes - race, prejudice - into the action. The plot revolves around close-knit brothers (Audie Murphy and Burt Lancaster) who hear whispers that their sister (Audrey Hepburn) was adopted by their mother (Lillian Gish) - and is, in fact, Kiowa Indian. A tale of intolerance unfurls with surprising subtlety.
