The Women4

This treasure from the Golden Age of Hollywood is a gloriously camp and memorably bitchy all-female comedy that's both reactionary and subversive in its take on romantic love. Directed with George Cukor's trademark refinement, it stars Norma Shearer as the New York society lady whose husband is snared by Joan Crawford's gold-digging shopgirl. Fittingly for a film concerned with questions of performance, artifice and deception, the turns are terrific - Rosalind Russell's shameless gossip especially - while the acidic one-liners are very, very funny.
