In a Nutshell:
Old lady relates the tale of her raunchy love affair as a young woman with ‘bit of rough’ Leo DiCaprio aboard the doomed ship Titanic.
Nothing on Earth could come between them.
‘God himself could not sink this ship.’
‘Iceberg, right ahead!’
‘Put your hands on me, Jack.’
It's 1912, and luxury liner Titanic - a ship built to be unsinkable, sets out on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York.
First-class passenger Rose (Kate Winslet) is rich, posh and facing an arranged marriage with fiancé Cal.
Below her, in third class, is poor bloke Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) who won his ticket in a last minute gamble.
After saving Rose from a suicide attempt, Jack falls in love and as the ship approaches its famous date with an iceberg, romance blossoms.
The story is framed by old Rose (in the present) narrating what happened (back in 1912) after a picture of her is found by treasure hunters in the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the sea.
Looking for the ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace, the treasure hunters lead by Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) desperately try to remain patient as the rambling old biddy relates her three hour story of love, self-discovery, sex and finally tragedy.
Back on the boat, Rose’s mother and fiancé Cal become increasingly displeased about the blooming love affair.
Then there’s the small matter of the impending sinking of the ship and the catastrophic lack of lifeboats.
Love turns to tragedy. Romance to disaster. Celine Dion warbles.
